Renegade Roller Derby – Splash Adelaide

Splash Adelaide – Renegade Roller Derby Bout
Level 8, Rundle Street Carpark
Saturday 23rd February 2013, 5:30pm

The scene was set for an explosive renegade bout of roller derby on the top floor of the Rundle Street carpark. The weather was hot, hot, hot, the crowd was pumped, and the pigeons had to find a new place to hang out.

The Phantoms and the Tornadoes, ADRD’s two mash-up league teams, were out for their first match-up since their Port Lincoln bout in 2012. It was bound to be a fast, hot game so the call was made to play two twenty-minute halves.

The Phantoms got away to an early lead, thanks to some beautiful jammer action from HotXGuns and Death by Disco. But the gap was shortened just before half time as Moe Skeeto donned the jammer panty and racked up a beautiful 35 points in a powerjam situation. Scores at half time were Phantoms 82 to Tornadoes 75.

The venue brought a great new vibe to the way Adelaide Roller Derby were able to show our sport to new spectators. The concrete slab floor reverberated every time a skater hit the deck, and the droning hum of the rollerskate wheels on the floor made a fantastic noise like a flight of bumblebees. The open but barred walls let through welcome breezes, and the street art on the interior walls perfectly complemented the street-style roller derby being played.

The second half was a test on both the skaters and the Zebras as the heat really began to take its toll. The Tornadoes and the Phantoms traded blow for blow as the scores remained tight. And then, in the last few jams of the day, the Tornadoes crept into the lead and managed to hang on for a win!
Final score: Tornadoes 162 to Phantoms 141.

Adelaide Roller Derby would like to thank the Adelaide City Council for the opportunity to share our sport with our beautiful city.
